Small Giants of Warehouse Safety: Why Rack Protection Accessories Are a Necessity
What is the most frequent accident in warehouse operations? Statistics show that forklift collisions with rack uprights (legs) top the list. Many businesses overlook these "minor" impacts. However, over time, metal fatigue compromises the load-bearing capacity of the rack.
At Atlas Raf, we have analyzed safety accessories that are low in cost but massive in function—protecting your thousands of dollars in investment and, more importantly, your personnel’s safety.
1. Upright Protectors: The "Knee Pads" of Your Racking System
Forklift operators most frequently strike the bottom 40 cm of the rack—the uprights—while turning or positioning pallets.
-
Why is it Necessary? The uprights are the most vital load-bearing components of a rack. A dent here disrupts the stability of the entire system under tons of load.
-
The Solution: Produced from steel or shock-absorbing plastic, upright protectors absorb the impact and prevent damage to the main rack structure. If damaged, you simply replace a low-cost protector, not the entire rack upright.
2. End-of-Aisle Barriers (Frame Protectors)
Aisle entrances and exits are zones with the highest forklift traffic and are most prone to accidents.
-
Function: It protects not just a single upright but the entire side frame of the rack as a block. It acts as a strong shield, preventing forklifts from entering the aisle too quickly and striking the rack. In Atlas Raf projects, this is recommended as a standard for high-traffic warehouses.
3. Anti-Collapse Mesh (Back Protection)
If there is a walkway or workspace behind your racks, this accessory is not a luxury; it is a legal requirement.
-
The Risk: An operator might accidentally push a pallet too far while placing it high up, causing it to fall from the back.
-
Safety: Steel mesh installed at the back of the rack prevents pallets or boxes from falling. It is indispensable for the "zero risk" rule regarding personnel safety.
4. Pallet Backstop Beams
Operators need to know "where to stop," especially in Double Deep systems or racks with open backs.
-
Function: It prevents the pallet from falling off the back or striking fire suppression systems (sprinklers) if present. The operator pushes the pallet, it hits the backstop, and stops. It provides great convenience for rapid operations.
